New Farm restaurant celebrates top awards and 25th Birthday!

Marking 25 years of dining, the New Farm Restaurant in Over Stratton has even more reasons to celebrate its 25th birthday as it recently won top Taste of the West Awards: “The No 1 Place to Go” and “Best South West Restaurant”.

Exceptional comments came from the judges of Taste of the West who said, “In a good many years of judging restaurants for Taste of the West, this was the best meal and the most pleasurable experience overall that we have enjoyed. We will most certainly be returning!” These were backed up by New Farm Restaurant customers who said “We always knew you were the best”, “It’s our No 1 Place to Go” and “Certainly lives up to expectations”

New Farm Restaurant in Over Stratton is run by husband and wife team Crispin and Jane Bond along with Jane’s sister Sue Seaton. Just over 25 years ago they converted what had been the family farmhouse into a country restaurant.

Twenty five years ago, farmer’s daughter Jane was ahead of the time as she wanted to showcase local produce and suppliers (long before it was fashionable!) and, using local suppliers, the restaurant has focused on this from the start. Regular winners of the Gold Award from the Taste of the West, this year they also won the coveted Best South West Restaurant and prestigious No 1 Place to Go award which has been an affirmation of this ethos.

The décor is simple and reflects the building’s heritage with farm implements hanging from the walls and photos of family members past and present who worked on the farm or in the restaurant. Furniture, crockery and linen is also in keeping with animal and farm motifs adorning curtains and chairs, plates and serviettes.

Using West Country and local produce is a big part of the menu with plenty of wonderful suppliers within a 20 mile radius providing for the kitchen. Jane and Crispin also add to this from their kitchen garden, along with delicious produce from their own chickens and bees.

The restaurant holds an annual charity cream tea every May to remember Sue and Jane’s mum, Peggy Gibbs who sadly passed away 15 years ago as a result of ovarian cancer. All donations go to nominated charities and this year a magnificent £1900 was donated andgiven to the Eve appeal and St Margaret’s Hospice. This has become quite an event on the social calendar for the area for residents with friends old and new joining together for a cup of tea and cake in the restaurant’s garden.

The restaurant is open evenings on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 6.30pm. There are regular speciality evenings on the First Thursday of every month, Ladies Lunches on the Second Wednesday of the month and Select Sundays for Sunday Lunch. Details can be found on their website www.newfarmrestaurant.co.uk or telephone 01460 240584.
